St Mary's Healthcare, Amsterdam
St. Mary’s is a local, independent healthcare organization with a proud 120-year tradition of providing quality, compassionate care to New York’s Fulton-Montgomery region. Our 1,600+ team members share a passion for excellence, a commitment to our community, and a fundamental belief that a career in healthcare is life changing for patients and providers alike. Our supportive environment encourages input, creativity, and collaboration. This combination enables us to attract and retain talented individuals who embrace opportunities to better serve our rural community. In addition to inpatient care at our 130-bed hospital, we offer a robust array of outpatient services where our community needs them most—close to home. Inspired by our founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, we are dedicated to serving the poor and underserved. We focus on meeting the spiritual, social, emotional, and physical needs of our patients while providing the resources to care for our St. Mary’s family.
Purpose
St. Mary’s Healthcare was formed not only to meet the healthcare needs of our community but also to support and empower our associates. At the heart of our mission is a steadfast commitment to delivering high-quality care to every patient we serve with care and compassion, ensuring that each patient receives the attention and treatment they deserve. We foster a culture of collaboration, where every team member’s input is valued, and working together leads to the best outcomes for our patients. Transparency and inclusion are fundamental to how we operate—ensuring that open communication and diverse perspectives shape our decisions and actions. By prioritizing these values, we create an environment where our associates feel respected, supported, and inspired to provide the best care possible while also growing personally and professionally. Together, we build a stronger, healthier community for all.
Vision

Our compassionate care will inspire confidence, evident through our reputation for excellence, service, and our commitment to safety and quality.

Additional Culture Details
Internal and external communication is central to our culture of collaboration and transparency. Our weekly internal e-newsletter is delivered every Tuesday and includes a CEO message and a straightforward way for associates to submit questions to the CEO. These are reviewed at our weekly leadership team meetings, so we can respond to associates promptly. Regularly scheduled CEO Forums give associates on all shifts at all locations the opportunity to ask questions in person and get updates from the president and CEO and other members of the senior team.
Our annual message to the community, published in our local newspapers, provides a public progress report on our accomplishments and is upfront about the challenges we face as an independent rural community hospital. Community synergy is paramount to our success and we are committed to collaborating and innovating with community partners to improve the health and wellbeing of our community.

Values
- Value: Care for poor and vulnerable persons
- At St. Mary’s, we are called to “go out of your way to assist those persons who are economically, socially, or in any way vulnerable,” and we are inspired and connected by this common purpose. Together, we ensure that all patients receive the same high-quality care, regardless of their ability to pay. We assist eligible patients in enrolling in free or low-cost health insurance programs and provide access to financial assistance. In 2024 alone, St. Mary’s provided $23.4 million in charity care.
St. Mary’s is a leader in serving our community’s most vulnerable populations—those who struggle with substance use disorders or have other mental health conditions. We also collaborate with community partners to connect patients with other essential services.
We know there are many reasons patients feel uncomfortable or hesitant to ask for what they need. Our associates respond with sensitivity, welcoming all with compassion and respect.
